The average person contains 25 to 30 layers of dead skin cells just sitting on top layer of the epidermis? This process is called keratinization, and it takes place every week.

Exfoliation treatment is needed on a weekly basis to help eliminate these dead skin cells in order to expedite healthy skin cell turnover. One of the best ways to remove dead skin cells is through a procedure known as dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning is a noninvasive cosmetic procedure that removes the top layers of your skin while softening the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and deep acne scarring, as well as make the skin’s surface look smooth, free of dead skin cells, and peach fuzz hair. It scrapes away dead skin cells, excess oil, and other debris. This helps maintain or restore the rate of cellular turnover that’s crucial to keeping your face fresh and youthful looking. The result is skin that’s smoother and softer immediately.

This procedure doesn’t require any downtime for recovery, which makes it extremely convenient. In this exfoliation treatment the practitioner uses a scalpel and exfoliating blade to skim dead skin

In effect, by scraping away dull surface skin, the procedure kicks the body’s self-healing properties into high gear. In turn, your body produces new skin cells that are healthier and plumper, which firms and tightens your skin while also brightening it. This painless procedure also removes the fine peach fuzz, or vellus hair, from the face. This is a crucial bonus because this excess hair, despite being so fine, can trap dead cells, oil, dirt, and other debris, all of which contribute to dull, lifeless skin as well as other skin issues like acne.

Furthermore, because your skin is free of this debris, makeup can go on more easily and won’t cake as quickly. Cleansers that you use at home clean your face better because they penetrate more readily. In fact, we often use dermaplaning as an initial “pre-treatment” therapy before other facial procedures, such as non-ablative laser skin resurfacing, microneedling, or chemical peels, to help prepare the skin so that these other procedures are more effective.

Dermaplaning is actually a form of exfoliation, only it’s more intense and effective compared to abrasive soaps and lotions. Dermaplaning removes unwanted facial hair and dead layers of skin. This process leaves behind younger-looking skin that is more even in texture and pigment.

After the initial consultation, a dermaplaning treatment package only takes about 45 minutes in total..

Dermaplaning is entirely pain free. It has been described by patients as feeling as if someone is sketching on their face with a pencil.

The procedure is fairly simple and entirely painless. Surgical scalpel is used to remove the dead layers of skin by applying short upward strokes.

The exfoliating effects of dermaplaning will generally last 4 to 6 months. Often, multiple treatments (3-4) spaced over 2 to 4 weeks are initially administered to achieve the desired results, after which regular maintenance is recommended.

The belief that hair grows back thicker and darker if shaved is an old wive’s tale. The fine vellus hair that is removed during the treatment will grow back with the same color and thickness as it had before. Individual experiences may vary, but typically, patients will see hair regrowth about four weeks post-procedure.

  • Warning signs of problems include severe redness, swelling, blistering, ulcers, pain, or signs of infection.
  • Aloe Vera is a great cooling agent for post-care.

After The Procedure

The great thing about dermaplaning is that there’s no downtime. Patients get back to their normal activities immediately, though there may be some initial redness for a few minutes. They will begin to see results immediately. Often, they will return on a regular basis to repeat the treatment, keeping their skin fresh and rejuvenated.
